The general consumer (and gamer) doesn't need more than 4 cores for just about majority of games/end uses. Majority of the CPU's out there are dual and quad core, A lot of the rhetoric on forums about more cores is just enthusiast noise. My laptop (Windows 10, Intel CPU, Nvidia GPU)? Been asked twice in one year. Side note, I find it odd that my two desktops (both Windows 7, both AMD CPUs, 1 with Nvidia 1 with AMD GPU) haven't been prompted for this survey in ages. WHAT? And how are dual and quad core CPU's the super majority here? I get that this survey is utterly massive and takes ages for it to show significant change, but damn this seems to be the opposite of the way the market is moving. what? Meanwhile, they AREN'T going down in GPU market share. This hardware survey doesn't seem to make much sense. When you also include increased adoption of DirectX 12 within newer games and the imminent approach of next generation games consoles which will only make DX12 (or Vulkan) the norm, I don't see there being much of a choice in operating system if you like to play modern games.

Windows 7 support is almost over and a lot of newer hardware only has drivers for Windows 10 64-bit. Going forward I only expect this to rise further and I think Windows 10 64-bit will be at least 80% of all Steam users, if not higher, by the end of 2019. We're also recently seen Canonical make the decision to drop 32-bit multi-arch support from 64-bit releases of Ubuntu starting with 19.10 later this year which will impact the Steam client, the majority of native Linux games and WINE/Proton for running Windows games. This year's release of macOS will end all support for 32-bit applications, which includes the Steam client itself, unless updated before then, and the vast majority of available games.

While there is no indication of what's causing this, one could assume a combination of the Xbox Game Pass for PC launch promotion and concerns over the future of 32-bit applications within 64-bit versions of macOS and Ubuntu to have played a part in this. The information gathered is incredibly helpful to us as we make decisions about what kinds of technology investments to make and products to offer." This month's survey shows a small increase for Windows overall to 96.49% of all users but also sees Windows 10 64-bit breaking the 70% barrier alongside Windows 7 64-bit declining down to 21.34%Īnother interesting takeaway from this month's survey is a decline in macOS and Linux usage. Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous.

It is not memory access per se that causes OOM's in TS - but a mismatch between addresses in the VAS and the Physical RAM - resulting in an invalid page fault - OOM.Over 70% of Steam users are now running Windows 10 64-bit according to the June 2019 hardware survey.įor those who are unaware, "Steam conducts a monthly survey to collect data about what kinds of computer hardware and software our customers are using. In the 64-bit version TS can access up to 128 TERABYTES of VAS and any amount of Physical RAM that is installed.Īgain using 64-bit TS and Windows 64-bit OS means that loading TS is much more efficient using only one load into the Working Set. In the 32-bit version running in Windows 64-bit OS – TA can only access a maximum of 4 GB of VAS, limiting some access to all of the Physical RAM that is installed.

The major difference between TS 32-bit and TS 64-bit is the Virtual Address Space.

This makes loading of TS quite inefficient and yes more prone to crashes. But the biggie is that it can only access 2 GB (max 3GB with a hack) of Virtual address space. If you run TS in 32-bit mode using WINDOWS 32-bit then it can only access UP TO around 3.5GB of Physical RAM.

32 bit is restricted to about 4Gb of memory so if you have a really intense bit of scenery with loads of trains on track (say Clapham Junction, Euston etc) then the game can overload the memory access for 32bit and crash.

What difference would I see : The big difference between 32 and 64 bit is the allowable memory access. I should say it may not run any better on a multicore pc than on a single core as posted previously by PookyHead. It is NOT TRUE multicore (parallel code) but it does run on several cores albeit unevenly. Sorry that is incorrect - Ts has been multicore capable since around TS2013 - in the menu then you could choose to run it multicore or not. Unfortunately both can only access one processor core, have dodgy graphics capabilities etc etc but it's good for what it can do
